* Blackout Cloth screens over 9' tall are considered over-sized and require one Sewn Seam across the center. Flexi, Rear Projection and SilverScreen Screens over 10.5' tall are considered over-sized and require one Welded Seam across the center (image links below). Once the screens are tension-mounted and the movie is running you should NOT notice the seam. See our FAQ to learn more about tension-mounting. All other screens are seamless.
4" The 4" Rule: Our Hanging Kits and our Standing Kits take the guess work out of designing and building your frame, but if you are designing your own frame we recommend using the 4" rule which will help you calculate the amount of space needed between the un-stretched screen and the outside dimensions of your frame to achieve proper screen tension for a clear, crisp image.
In general, there should be 4" from the outside edge of the un-stretched Finished Edge Screen to the outside edge of a pipe frame. This means a total of 8 inches (4" top/bottom and 4" left/right). This assumes use of our 6" Black Ball Bungees and pipes which are 1" in diameter. If your frame materials &/or bungees are of a different size adjustments will need to be made accordingly.
Example: Let's say you purchase our 9x16 Foot Finished Edge Screen.
- Find the Total Height (C) and Total Width (D) of your screen on this chart.
Add: 110" + 8" (4" on the top and bottom) – The frame height should be about 118 inches
Add: 191.7" + 8" (4" on each side) – The frame width should be about 199.7 inches
- In this example the 9x16 has a total height and width of: 110 x 191.7 inches
- Answer: If you are designing and building your own frame using the 4" rule, the outside dimensions of your frame should be 118" x 199.7".
To achieve proper tension when mounting your screen to your poles; start by inserting the EMT pipe 4 inches into each Fitting, then push or pull the pipes in or out of the fittings until you have pulled the screen tight. By designing the frame so it's adjustable, in this way, you can achieve proper screen tension.
If you have a smaller screen, such as a 5.5x7 or smaller, you may find it acceptable to reduce the 4" rule to 3.5". Conversely, if you have an oversize screen (larger than 10.5 ft. tall) you may need to increase the 4” rule to allow for 4-6 inches.
